A little about The Lavender Farm at Woodstock
We are a small-scale lavender farm located in Woodstock, Kentucky, which is just outside of Somerset. On our farm you will find two women - mother and daughter - with a passion for the purple herb and a willingness to experiment.
The idea for The Lavender Farm at Woodstock came about when Mary Ann (mom) read about two ladies who started a similar venture in an Farm Credit Cookbook. Allison was looking for a way to honor and use the land we both love. Allison is the 4th generation to live on the farm in Woodstock, Kentucky. It's the same farm that Mary Ann was raised on and both of us are hopelessly sentimental. Using the land in a new way gave us the opportunity to not only bond together, but also pay tribute to our family (the Colyers) who worked through the Great Depression and numerous other challenges to save this farm. From there, we decided to "go for it" and started researching varieties of lavender. We settled on planting Grosso and Munstead varieties (Grosso is one of the more hearty lavender plants and more easily grown in a climate such as Kentucky; and Munstead is much the same, but with shorter stems and it is also a culinary lavender). We ordered 100 lavender plants and grew from there, planting more each year. We also visited another of Kentucky's lavender farms to see their operation and learn from them. Since that time, lavender has become more commonplace in Kentucky and we have been able to connect with others who are enjoying small lavender farms throughout the state. We are so thankful for our time with other lavender growers in the area, as their expertise has allowed us to learn so much! In total, we have more than 200 lavender plants (we lost some due to weather and disease). Our varieties now include Sharon Roberts, Grosso, Fat Spike Grosso, Munstead, and Sachet. We are so excited to see what the future holds for our little endeavor. Thanks for visiting our website. We look forward to hearing from you! |
